Soan Papdi: “Traditional Indian flaky sweet with almonds and pistachio”
Overall rating:
We got this for Christmas from Paul’s sister. It seems to consist mostly of sugar (spun?) in very fine layers, with a pistachio taste*.
Quite a challenge to eat this because rather than in neat little cubes as you see on the package, our Soan Papdi looked more like this:

Here are the reviews of the test panel, as you can see, opinions were rather divided.

“Tastes like Chinese dried fish meat.”

“The texture is nice, it melts on the tongue. Too bad that it is so hard to eat.”

“This is so sweet that I cannot eat it.”

“Maybe it could go with curry? Or something sour or bitter?”
![]()
“I like it. Very sweet but with a nice flavour of nuts.”
Conclusion: This is fun to try out. It is quite different from Dutch and German sweets and I would like to know how and when people traditionally eat it. I couldn’t imagine putting a whole block in my mouth – it is so sweet! It has an interesting texture though, sort of crispy but the layers are so thin that they melt on your tongue.
